Status: Former UFC Welterweight contender.
Ht: 5-9 Wt: 170
DOB: May 3, 1972 In: Chicago, IL
Hobbies/Interests: I write poetry. I spent four years in drawing school. I like collecting fight posters from different venues – UFC, boxing. I have a collection framed all over the walls of my home.”
Nicknames: Lion Heart. I guess because I never quit. I didn’t like that one too much. Then there was Anaconda because I was on a spree of choking people. Then there was Hollywood, Pimpilicious, The Canary – I wore the Bruce Lee ‘Game of Death’ outfit at my first Pancrase event and fight fans in Holland dubbed me The Canary. And International Pimp of Mystery.
Favorite Movies: Friday, Gladiator, The Green Mile, Scarface, Jaws.
Musical Tastes: Classical, rap, R&B, Beethoven, Quincy Jones, Anita Baker, Bo Diddley, BB King – I did a water color of him. RUN DMC, LL COOL J.
Favorite Meal: Double burger and fries.
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: Lucky Charms.
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Haagen Dasz caramel vanilla swirl.
Pre-Fight Feeling: I’m so relaxed, so stoic about the entire fight. I’ve done so many fights and competitions now I don’t get nervous. I’m just out there to win the fight and do the best I possibly can.
Early Fighting Memory: My first NHB match, being knocked out in nine seconds by Lavern Clark. It was a straight right hand when I shot in on him to try a double-leg takedown up against the fence. (Where?) That was at Extreme Challenge in Waterloo, Iowa (’97).
Funny Fighting Memory: I did a semi-strip tease in a fight during the round [smiles]. I was wearing two pairs of shorts and the guy I was fighting was no more than three feet away from me. And I actually pulled my top trunks off and I kicked em over to my cornerman. And I started dancing in the middle of the ring while I’m fighting the guy. Just to be having fun, to do something unexpected. (Where was this at?) At the Indiana Martial Arts Challenge (’98).
Greatest Sports Moment: Using a spinning back fist to knock out Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie black belt jiu-jitsu. He was Renzo Gracie’s black belt instructor. Because everyone hyped him up to be so great of a fighter when he hadn’t really proven himself as I have. The mystique behind the Gracie jiu-jitsu ways…I essentially broke.
Most Painful Moment: Actually two. When I fought the nine-time kickboxing champion Manson Gibson for the second time. I soundly beat him and they gave him a decision win over me in my hometown of Chicago. And when I fought Pat Miletich the second time.
Worst Injury: I broke my right hand throwing 25 spinning back fists. Landed 15 on this one guy at Super Brawl in Honolulu, Hawaii (’99). I couldn’t believe he (Simon Posner) was able to withstand them. 15 landed! Simon Posner – I give him credit. Tough S.O.B.
People Qualities Most Admired: Honesty, first and foremost. If you don’t like me, tell me. Don’t smile in my face and hate me. If you hate me and you’re honest about it, I”ll respect you for it. I like people that are ambitious, striving for something. They’re goal-oriented. These are people I like to surround myself with.
Education: University of Tennessee (Commerical Art/Advertising Design).
