WEC Featherweight champion Urijah Faber stopped by for a short visit in New York City last week and spoke with veteran New York Post columnist George Willis about his next fight this Wednesday in Hollywood, FL, his disappointment at the downfall of EliteXC and more:
“Fortunately I’m with the best team out there (WEC which is owned by Zuffa, LLC, the same outfit that owns the mega-successful UFC). But competition is important. It’s important for our economy. It’s important for fighting. And it’s important for the fighters themselves.”
“The UFC has the best fighters and I would have stood out in the UFC as well. But they want to use me as a catalyst for the WEC. I feel like I’m very lucky to be where I am and I’m fortunate to be the guy being pushed. But I’m also winning on top of that.”
“(Mike Brown) does a lot of things pretty well. But what he does pretty well, I’m going to do just a little bit better.”
The 29-year-old MMA superstar nicknamed ‘The California Kid’ wrestled in college at University California-Davis and has a pro MMA record of 21-1 including 13 wins in a row. His last fight last June against Jens Pulver attracted more than 1.5 million television viewers for Versus. Faber’s next fight vs. Mike Brown (19-4) this Wednesday night will also be televised live by Versus from The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL.
