Childhood Heroes: “Let’s do the Biofile, daddy! Not one. I never had one. I looked up to no one but myself. Never ever. Now I have heroes. My heroes are young kids. Isn’t that weird? My heroes are BJ Penn and Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva. When I was younger, I was my own idol. After football practice, I’d run 10 extra sprints. My teammates were always like, Why do you have to do this to us?! Because if I didn’t, we’d all be complacent by Friday.”
Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “I like taking care of friends. I like making sure everyone around me is okay, good. If they’re good, they’re positive thinking. Depression and negativity is like a disease. I like to do everything. I like to read, play video games, play chess. Life is a big, huge chess game. Do you get too overzealous, get out there and make a mistake? Or do you wait for the right moment? I have a short attention span for boring stuff. So I love to do a lot of stuff – rock climbing, just stay busy. I love to experience things I know nothing about. Play tennis. I am Andre Agassi. You can’t make me run enough to tire me out. I’ll run 2 1/2 miles in one set on that damn court. If you can’t live without pain and punishment, you’re pretty much screwed. You know that, right Scoop?”
Nicknames: “Monster. Randleburger. 210% – I give 210% every time. Evil – because I used to do a lot of evil stuff. If you pissed me off I’d pour ketchup in your drink, right in front of you.”
Favorite Movies: “Have you seen Carlito’s Way? How about A Bronx Tale? I love those Italian movies. And all inspiration movies. Remember The Titans. I still cry whenever I see it. Yeah. I’m just all about it. Any movies that gets me to look inside myself is always my favorite.”
Musical Tastes: “Tool. I may seem like a volatile guy but I’m just an average guy who gets fired up to fight. Because I have to be in the right mindset to fight.Tool gets me in that state of mind that I have to be in to fight. That I can rip his arm off. And then suck the blood out. Use your gristle as dental floss. And use your metacarpal bones as tooth picks [laughter]. I love rap music. Heavy metal. Rock. Country. I just love music. I look at Randy Couture and Little Evil (Jens Pulver). They’ve given me so much inside. Watchin’ Randy belt my ass. When I listen to Tool it makes me feel crazy, nuts. Makes me calculate how I want to hurt you. It gives me the presence of mind to hurt you.”
Favorite Meal: “Oh, are you kidding? I am a meatasaurus. Red meat, all meat, bloody meat. I love venison, steak, roast beef. Just love to tear my teeth into it!”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Are you kidding? What is cereal? I eat bacon, eggs and grits. I cook. I’m a domesticated man. I love to cook, be home. My wife lets me cook.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Rainbow sherbet.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “In Brazil. Watching Mark Coleman get beat up by an old woman, an old wrinkly woman. She caught a pop on Mark Coleman and said, Fuck you! I was fighting Sokata from Brazil, Ebenezer Braga and Carlos Barreto in an hour and a half. Oh my god, I was overtime in my first fight with Braga. I’m sitting on the ring rope waiting, and I look over at Mark and this woman all of the sudden pours a cup of Coca Cola on him. He turns around to look and she goes, I did it, Fuck you! Then I turn around and there’s Braga ready to punch me in the head. They started the overtime without ever telling me! That was funny as hell. My funniest fighting moment.”
First Job: “Janitor during summertime at my high school in Sandusky, Ohio, ninth grade. Helped wax floors. Then I installed pools. Worked in a Harley Davidson shop. Personal trainer, fitness consultant.”
First Car: “Brown Cadillac Coupe de Ville, 1978. Yeah daddy, it was mint.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “Before the fight I think positive thoughts. I’ll be reading the book ‘The Edge’ by Howard Ferguson, in my dressing room. The baddest wrestling coach of all time. From St. Edwards out of Cleveland, Before that, my wife reads to me at the hotel room. It could be Brair Rabbit. She just reads to me. When I hear that calm, soothing voice when I wake up, I’m ready. (Upon entering the ring do you look at your opponent?) Oh yeah. I want him to see my eyes. There’s never any fear, I am not fearful of dying. I’m scared of not performing well. For me, it’s scary that I don’t get scared before fights. I don’t care who I fight, when my mind is right, I don’t get beat. I want them to know I’m ready, that I want to be there with them. I know guys are nervous to fight me.”
Greatest Sports Moment: “Winning the 177 pound wrestling national championship with broken jaw. At Ohio State. Beat Corey Olsen out of Minnesota (1993). Because I broke my jaw a month before nationals. So I had to wrestle the Big Tens with a broken jaw. I’d stop in the match and pop my jaw back into place. I dug inside myself to pull it out. My greatest moment was digging inside myself and finding that little me that said, I can do this, I can win – with a broken jaw. Nothing in the world mattered but that win. Believe me, a broken jaw sucks. (How did you break it?) I broke it in practice with my teammate Rex Holman who was a national champion that year. We were practicing, not going full out, and he fell right on my head. I didn’t see him coming. Broke both my jaws.”
Most Painful Moment: “Walking away from college wrestling when I had one year left. I could have been the best college wrestler ever. All the injuries, broken hands, broken jaw, always cutting weight, cutting 20 pounds at a time – I couldn’t take it any more.”
Favorite Vacation Spot: “So many places. Actually I like Brazil.”
Favorite Fighters To Watch: “Randy Couture. He fights like an animal. And then after, he talks like a gentleman! I’ve been watching him for years. I was intimidated by him a little bit. I love watching Pat Miletich and his group. BJ Penn is one of the baddest motherfuckers I’ve ever shaken hands with in my life. Lil Evil. Anderson Silva.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “Honestly, I love people that are so honest. I think the world is full of misconceptions. People are groomed to hide their feelings. Oh, don’t be so honest, don’t be so blunt. I believe in honesty. Put it on your arm and wear it. Don’t sugarcoat anything. Tell me you don’t like me. Then I’ll do something to make you respect me. I’ve cut a lot of friends out of my life because they weren’t honest. Be like Clint Eastwood – shoot straight from the hip.”
Family: Wife, Elizabeth; son, Calvin, daughter, Jasmine.
