Status: Former UFC Middleweight champ. MMA Legend.
Ht: 5-10 Wt: 193
DOB: December 8, 1972 In: Santa Monica, CA
Childhood Heroes: “Wow. Muhammad Ali. And Charles Bronson was the man. And Bruce Lee, definitely.”
Nicknames: “Frankenstein – as a kid, which I didn’t like much. The Hammer. The Squirrel – because of my wrestling style. Every once in a while in Japan, a Japanese guy who remembers me will come up to me and say, Hey Squirrel. I don’t know if it was meant as a compliment [laughs].”
Hobbies/Leisure Activities: “I like to train, wrestle and box. My hobbies are rock climbing and watching TV. I play all games and sports but I’m not good at anything but fighting.”
Early Fighting Memory: “I just remember all the hard lessons. And I remember victories. That the working was so hard, that the victory wasn’t worth it. I mean, killing the guy in a minute – when I worked so hard, when I killed myself for a minute.”
Favorite Movies: “Braveheart, The Human Stain, I like independent things, exciting stuff. Terminator, Gladiator.”
Favorite TV Shows: “Desperate Housewives, Dancing With The Stars, anything on the Discovery Channel.”
Musical Tastes: “Country, Willie Nelson, George Jones, rap, Biggie, 80′s rock, Cyndi Lauper, Def Leppard.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “Concentrate on relaxing my body. I visualize the ending – winning. Always visualize that I’ve won. (Look at opponent when entering Octagon?) Look right into his eyes. So I can see at that instant – when there’s so much stress – being on TV, so many people watching, with all those factors. If I look in his eyes and see he’s hard as steel, I know I’m in a fight then. If I look in his eyes and his eyes are wandering around, looking around, it means he’s not as dialed into it like me. Then I’ll crush him. If that look’s not in his eye, I have to put it there.”
Childhood Dream: “Always wanted to be a professional athlete, then an action movie star.”
Favorite Meal: “Pizza. Second favorite is steak.”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Raisin Bran. We have like eight different cereals in the house now.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Rocky Road.”
First Job: “Mowing lawns (age 10).”
First Car: “1972 canary yellow Chevy Nova.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “I got so tired, so dehydrated in a fight once, that I licked the sweat off an opponent’s back. My mouth and throat were so dry, I wanted to stop me from gagging on my mouthpiece. Licking your opponent’s back – so that’s hardcore fighting [laughs]. And it worked too. I kicked his ass the next round (vs. Kuniyoku in Tokyo in ’95).”
Greatest Sports Moment: “Tito Ortiz fight (’99). Or my last win.”
Most Painful Moment: “Losing my last fight (Cung Le).”
Last Vacation: “It was about a year ago. August of last year. Where I conceived my child in Hawaii.”
Toughest Man Faced: “Was a guy named Enson Inoue, 1997. And I honestly thought he was going to beat me to death.”
Which Fight Were You At Your Finest Best: “Best performance I ever had was fighting Tito Ortiz. Just everything worked perfectly that night. (Flawless performance?) Yeah, no mistakes. Nothing. I got cut, but even then it wasn’t my fault.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “I like to see people be good people. I think that helps everyone be good people. And honest, hard working people who do what they love to do. And do it well.”
