Childhood Heroes: “My heroes? God [smiles].”

Favorite Movies: “Godfather and City of God.”
Musical Tastes: “I like the music, all the good music, like rock and
pop, Brazilian, African music, reggae.”
Childhood Dream: “Maybe professional surfer [smiles].”
First Fighting Memory: “I start pretty early, when I was
ten-years-old. And I start competitions, tournaments in jiu-jitsu when
I was 15 in Brazil. So many fights.”
Favorite Meal: “Italian, Brazilian.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “One day before I’m a little nervous. In the
morning I’m a little nervous. But the time of the fights, I just relax
until I fight. I don’t feel anything. Just, I do the job, you know? I
need to work. (Look at opponent after entering ring?) Yeah, all the
time. I’m a hunter. He’s my prey. Something like that [smiles].”
First Job: “Salesman, selling clothes (age 18).”
First Car: “VW Pusca – Beetle (silver).”
Greatest Sports Moment: “When I got the belt of the UFC (TKO win over
Dave Menne in 2002 in Connecticut).”
Most Painful Moment: “I don’t know…figure when I got the headbutt
against (Dan) Henderson. The guys from Pride – doesn’t matter – (they)
just let things go.”
Worst Injury: “No, my knee sometimes. Not so bad.”
Embarrassing Fighting Memory: “No, I don’t think so.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “Maybe when I was watching again my fight
against Matt Lindland and John McCarthy stopped the fight. That’s a
little mistake. After this, everything was good.”
Favorite Fighters To Watch: “Minotauro – his heart. How he fights, all
the time he goes ahead. He tries to submit a guy all the time. Randy
Couture – like Minotauro, all the time he goes ahead. Minotauro has
more skills than Couture. Vitor Belfort – many skills. Very good
stand-up. Ricardo Arona. Carlos Newton.”
Toughest Man Faced: “In my career? In my fight? Tom Erickson (in ’96
at Martial Arts Reality Superfights). Because our fight (was) so tough.
He was much bigger than me.”
In What Fight Were You At Your Very Best?: “I guess Matt Lindland (May
2002). I think so. Because it was hard. The fight stop, then start
again. Hard for my mind to keep focus on the fight. At moment, it was a
very hard performance.”
Favorite Vacation Spot: “Hawaii, surfing.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “Good character.”
