While the title of Topps’ initial release of UFC themed trading cards led most to believe that a continuation of the same product was in store, that speculation is both right and wrong.

This past February, Topps’ unveiled their first line of UFC cards complete with the obvious choice of header: “Round 1.” While rumors insisted that the “Round 2″ series was just around the corner, Topps has chosen to put a small spin on their upcoming product.

With a July release date set to coincide with both the UFC Fan Expo and UFC 100, Topps’ second series of UFC trading cards will be entitled ” 2009 Topps UFC” rather than carry the expected theme of “UFC: Round 2.”

With a base set of 165 cards, the company also plans to feature a plethora of specially themed chase cards. Like the first release, these insert cards will include both memorabilia swatches and authentic autographs.

Along with a mix of fresh faces on the UFC roster, Topps also promises to feature the familiar legendary fighters who paved the way for the organization during the early days of American MMA.

The certified autograph issue cards, and memorabilia cards, of the upcoming series promise to feature a cleaner card design. The blurry photos that were featured on the cards of some of the earlier UFC fighters’ cards (and frowned upon by card collectors) in “Round 1″ are also said to be a thing of the past.
