Born On: August 17, 1976 In: Anguila, British Caribbean
Childhood Heroes: “Muhammad Ali, Daredevil, Spiderman, for sure [laughs]. And I’d have to say Miyoto Musashi - 15th century Samurai. He wrote a book.”
Nicknames: Ronin, Li’l Tyson, Jungle Boy.
Hobbies/Interests: “Video games. Go to the movie theatre. I like to exercise. And sit at home with a good book. Studying. I like studying.”
Favorite Movies: “The Matrix, Ran, Ghost In The Shell, the Star Wars trilogy.”
Musical Tastes: “Sinead O’Connor, Bjork, The Cranberries, and some of the more old school stuff like Rapper’s Delight.”
Childhood Dream(s): “An astronaut. Hey, I might still be one. I’ve got the rest of my life ahead of me to make that path happen. Right now, I always wonder what it would be like to be a doctor. Which I’m working towards right now. So, hopefully that happens.”
Early Fighting Memory: “Fighting Dan Henderson (at UFC 17 in Mobile, AL). With an aerial 360 counter on his shoot. Never will be anything like that again [smiles]. It landed. Crazy. You have to see it. Did one full revolution in the air. Sideways. His head went around. My head went right around. Landed right on our butts after.”
First Job: “Paperboy Toronto Sun. Actually, my first job was carrying buckets of cement when I was six years old. That was working back at home in the British Virgin Islands. The construction guys gave me a buck a day to carry buckets of cement. Little kid. I guess that’s why I have big muscles now [laughs].”
First Car: “Black Suzuki Swift.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “Think of my friends and family. The hard work. And I can’t wait to go to bed after the fight [laughs]. I like to sleep. [Upon entering the octagon, do you look at your opponent?] Yeah, (as if) just to say, Hey, we’re here, man. Gone to our happy place. We’ll be back in a while.”
Greatest Sports Moment(s): “I think it was scoring that three-pointer in grade nine gym class, playing basketball. From the other side of the court. The ball’s checked in. Nothing’s left on the clock. Just whooped it up. And it just went in. Pretty cool. [Greatest fighting moment?] Fighting Big John Rivera (1997 in Montreal). I was 180, he was 286. That was a big moment for me. He was a big guy. I didn’t win the fight. It pretty much went the distance. But I had to discontinue the fight due to severe exhaustion. I was wiped.”
Most Painful Moment: “My first loss to Matt (Hughes). When we had the double-knockout. That really bit. I knew I won the fight. I just had to accept it.”
Favorite Meal: “I like sushi.”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Corn Flakes.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Vanilla.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “Me and Matt had some fun times. I remember one time (for a prefight publicity shoot), we were supposed to walk up to do a posedown. And I looked up and said, Ok, Matt, it’s a walkoff [laughs]. And we both just died laughing. You have to see (the movie) Zoolander to understand what I’m talking about. That was just me and him bugging one another.”
Favorite Fights: “I like Robbie Lawler-Aaron Riley. That was pretty cool. And guys I like watching are…an operator like Pat Miletich. He’s really methodical. Really cool. Another guy I like is BJ Penn. And Caol Uno. And Genki Sudo is awesome. He’s one of the awesome Japanese fighters out there. Brings a different flavor, a real international appeal to the show. He’s the biggest risk-taker we’ve got, man. That guy bets it all on one thing. He’s awesome like that.”
Favorite Vacation Spot: “Back home, in the British Virgin Islands, on the beach I grew up on, Kane Garden Bay.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “Loyalty. Honor. Honor is a big one. I like to see honor in people. Do honorable things. Their honor is a lot to them.”
