Ht: 5-11 Wt: 215
Born On: February 11, 1964 In: Warner Robins, Georgia
Childhood Heroes: “I didn’t have any.”
Hobbies/Interests: “I like golf. Coach high school wrestling. Coach the San Diego Mighty Mites - it’s a kid’s program from age 5-14. And watch football on Sundays.”
Childhood Dream: “Pro football player. Pittsburgh Steelers, linebacker.”
Early Fighting Memory: “I would have to say my first fight (vs. Anjo) in Osaka, Japan (1990 0r ‘91). In front of 17,000. I had a good match, won the match. It was my first time in front of a crowd that big. That started me in my direction, started my career off. They were chanting my name.”
Favorite Music: “Aroesmith, Toby Keith, Nelly, George Straight & Emeniem”
Favorite Movies: “Scarface, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, Braveheart, Once We’re Warriors.”
Favorite TV Show: “Sopranos.”
Musical Tastes: “I really don’t have. Probably my favorite is country, jazz, rock, top 40 - just depends what I’m doing. I think Garth Brooks is entertaining. I like George Strait’s music a lot.”
First Job: “It would have to be gas station pumping gas. No…it was a dishwasher at a tiny Chinese restaurant in Susanville, CA (age 14).”
First Car: “1972 black 442 Oldsmobile.”
Favorite Meal: “I don’t have a favorite meal. I love food [laughs].”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Don’t have one. Don’t eat cereal too much.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Don’t have that either. I don’t like plain ice cream unless it’s in a shake with like Snickers, peanuts, caramel or different things in it.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “Excitement. You get two. One, when you know you’re prepared, you’re excited and confident. But when you didn’t train properly or you’re injured, there’s an insecurity. You’re not on the attack as much as you would be if you were healthy. You know that…so you try to protect and defend yourself instead of going out and destroying.”
Greatest Sports Moment: “That’s a tough one. I would say winning Super Fight Championship, Dan Severn. Because that was the fight that we established a Super Fight Champion. There weren’t any overall champions established at that point. He just won Ultimate Ultimate, he was the number one guy. I was coming off beating Royce Gracie. I was 80-20 underdog and I beat him in less that two minutes.”
Most Painful Moment: “The Tito Ortiz-Ken Shamrock fight. I knew I could beat him, but I didn’t. For whatever reasons. (Rematch is in the works, true?) Yeah. We have to wait and see of he beats Chuck Liddell.”
Worst Injury: “Torn ACL. Training before the Tito Ortiz fight. I tore it before, then reinjured it. Had surgery about four months ago - total ACL replacement. Things are looking good.”
Favorite Fighters To Watch: “Phil Baroni - he’s exciting to watch. BJ Penn. Uno. I like Randy Couture. Vitor Belfort - when he’s on his game. Some younger guys coming up. I’ve seen a few out there, there’s definitely some potential out there coming up.”
Favorite Fights: “Let me think…Randy Couture-Tito Ortiz. I thought…the cocky arrogance of Tito Ortiz…for Couture - a 40-year old man and role model who trains hard - to manhandle the 24-year old kid and humble him, that was my favorite fight. Uno-Penn III, technical fight. Two guys just went after it.”
Favorite Vacation Spot: “I don’t go on vacations. My favorite vacation is to stay at home and watch TV.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “My very first fight in Japan, I had these trunks from pro wrestling. At the time, flourescant colors were in, yellow, red. I wore lavender. But the lights turned them hot pink. And my kids still rib me on that one. They say, We got proof you wore pink tights in a fight. And I say, At that time, I could wear whatever I wanted [smiles]. Against Dan Severn, I wore purple Speedos. John McCarthy looked at me and goes, What are you wearing?!”
People Qualities Most Admired: “I like people to be real. By real, I mean don’t come off being something you’re not.”
