Musical Tastes: “Hardcore rap, Tupac, Wu Tang.”
Favorite TV Shows: “The Simpsons. I really don’t watch much TV. Actually, I like SportsCenter.”
Early Fighting Memory: “Winning the Junior Olympics in tae kwan do in Fort Worth, Texas (age 9). I just dominated. Came out bombing.”
Favorite Meal: “Steak and potatoes.”
Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch.”
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Cookies ‘n cream.”
Childhood Dream: “Football player, boxer, baseball player, something to do with athletics.”
Pre-Fight Feeling: “Think about going out and partying after. Eat some good food and chill. I just relax before my fights. Think about going home after, spending some money. (Upon entering the Octagon, do you look at opponent?) Usually. I don’t try to get in a staredown before the fight. No reason to staredown or look in their eyes. I’m not trying to scare anybody.”
Pre-Fight Meal: “We’re usually at a buffet. I try to get back up to 185. Probably about 60% protein and 40% whatever I feel like eating. Some pasta. With pop - that’s soda, usually orange. Water. And I make sure I take all my vitamins and protein powder.”
Funny Fighting Memory: “Not much funny happens. Well, at the last UFC in Las Vegas, Tony Frycklund had his hair dyed blond. And some guy came up to him for an autograph, thinking he was Tito Ortiz. We made a big joke about it.”
First Job: “Freeman’s Tree Farm planting trees and doing landscaping. In Bettendorf, Iowa (age 16).”
First Car: “Blue Chevrolet Celebrity. Crashed it into a telephone pole two weeks after I got it (age 16).”
Greatest Sports Moment: “I don’t know. Every moment’s great. Every fight’s great. You live by the moment. Every one of my fight’s are big, at the time. They’re all equal.”
Most Painful Moment: “Mike Tyson getting beat by Lennox Lewis. Any time he gets beat - I don’t like to see him get beat. It’s like an older brother losing. I’ve been watching him fight since he knocked out Spinks in 90 seconds in (1988). But if you’re talking about me getting hurt in a fight, it doesn’t happen. I don’t feel anything. There’s no time to feel pain.”
Worst Injury: “I haven’t had very many injuries. Hurt my rotator cuff lifting (weights). I had a hip pointer before the (Aaron) Riley fight.”
Favorite Fights: “Gatti-Ward I. Vanderlei Silva-Sakuraba I. Because I like domination. He just went out there and manhandled him. Just like a beatdown from the streets. Just a street fight, a brawl. It got nasty.”
Favorite Fighters: “I still like Tyson. I’m not a fair-weather fan! I like Jens. He fights a lot like I do. He’s the top pound-for-pound fighter, most people say. I like watching one at their best and he is the best. Matt Hughes. I train with him. I know his strengths. I try to learn as much as I can from him. I like to watch him take people down and manhandle them. I like domination. Phil Baroni. Fast hands. Puncher, brawler. That’s what I like about him. Plus I’m good friends with him. B.J. Penn. All the Miletich guys.”
Favorite Vacation Spot: “My couch! That’s a vacation to me. Being able to eat what you want, doing whatever you want to do. Just chillin’. As long as you’re not in the gym, that’s a vacation.”
People Qualities Most Admired: “Just normal people. Every day people. Not trying to get anything out of you. Just caring and kind-hearted, truthful and respectful people.”
